We are pleased to announce that we will be publishing world-first research findings that demonstrate the viability of distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) technology as a pipeline leak detection monitoring tool. The research will be presented for the first time at the International Pipeline Conference (IPC) 2018 in Calgary, Canada.
Historically, pipeline leak detection monitoring has been achieved with the aid of a number of technologies, such as mass balance systems or acoustic pressure wave monitoring systems. While DAS has received interest as an alternative for leak detection monitoring, to date the only studies into its potential have been conducted in controlled laboratory-based environments.
In order to demonstrate DAS’ full potential, we conducted extensive real-world testing of DAS technology, focused on leak simulations conducted in an actual pipeline environment and in direct comparison to existing technologies. This testing demonstrated DAS’ efficacy as a pipeline leak detection monitoring technology, with a number of key benefits standing-out when compared to conventional solutions.

However, to date these deployments have focused on the application of TPI (third party intrusion) detection as part of operator efforts to enhance the security of their pipeline assets.
“Leak detection is just as important as security for pipeline operators, but utilising DAS technology for leak detection remains a relatively new concept, one with little documented positive proof. As such, the real-world testing we have conducted is a genuine first. Improving leak detection on pipelines remains a significant priority for operators, and the results we will be publishing could represent a major landmark for the industry.”
Our findings will be presented at the IPC. The conference, which will be held on 24th-28th September in Calgary, Canada, is the world’s premier pipeline event and will be attended by international energy corporations, pipeline associations and regulatory agencies from around the world.
